Britton Court Solar Farm set to Power 15,000 Homes
A major new solar farm and battery energy storage project in Kent has been granted approval by Canterbury City Council, paving the way for clean energy generation for thousands of homes and a significant boost to local biodiversity.
The Britton Court Solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project will deliver 38MW of solar capacity alongside 30MW of battery storage, covering 56 hectares of land to the north of Tyler Hill. Once operational, it is expected to supply renewable electricity to around 15,000 homes while strengthening the resilience of the local power grid.
The planning application, submitted by Renewable Connections in December 2024, received approval on 4 July under delegated powers following public consultations and engagement with statutory bodies. This approval also allows the project to be included in the NESO Gate 2 submission.
Michael Hughes, Chief Executive Officer of Renewable Connections, commented:
“We welcome Canterbury City Council’s decision to approve the Britton Court solar farm and BESS project. Valuable input from the local community and elected members has shaped the final design. This development will play an important role in tackling the climate emergency while delivering a biodiversity uplift of over 100%.”
As part of its environmental commitments, the solar farm project will introduce new skylark nesting plots, enriched grasslands, and enhanced habitats for reptiles, amphibians, and insects. The site encompasses eight agricultural fields situated between Tyler Hill and Radfall, intersected by Hackington Road.
