Electricity Generation Soars with Record Solar and Wind Power

A new report reveals record solar power output and near-record wind electricity generation across Europe in the third quarter of 2024

Renewable energy production in Europe surged to new milestones in the third quarter of 2024, demonstrating the region’s growing reliance on sustainable power sources. According to a recent report by Montel Analytics, solar power reached a record-breaking 94TWh in quarterly generation, marking a notable 15% increase from the same period in 2023. This significant growth was largely driven by contributions from Germany, Italy, and Spain, which collectively produced 24.8TWh, 16.9TWh, and 9.7TWh of solar energy, respectively.

Wind power also saw a major boost, with output climbing to 104.7TWh—the highest ever recorded for a third quarter and the second-highest overall. Leading wind production came from Germany, the UK, and Spain, underscoring their commitment to green energy. Analysts noted that the sharp rise in renewable generation has resulted in an increased number of occasions where day-ahead electricity prices fell to zero or even negative levels. These price drops were especially frequent in countries with high renewable output, such as Finland, Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands.

This shift reflects how renewable energy is reshaping Europe’s electricity markets, balancing supply and demand in ways not seen with traditional energy sources. Industry experts suggest that these instances of zero or negative prices could become more common as the continent continues its transition toward a sustainable energy future, creating new dynamics for energy pricing and grid management.
