NOTTINGHAM COULD BE POWERED BY THE SUN

Elements Green New 800 MW Solar Project Aims to Power 400,000 Homes

Plans are in motion for a landmark solar park that could generate enough energy to power every home in Nottingham.

Renewable energy firm Elements Green has proposed the construction of the Great North Road (GNR) Solar and Biodiversity Park near Newark-on-Trent. The ambitious project aims to deliver 800 MW of green energy, enough to meet the electricity needs of 400,000 homes—equivalent to all households across Nottinghamshire.

If approved, the solar park would make a significant contribution to the UK’s decarbonisation goals by reducing reliance on fossil fuels, enhancing energy security, and potentially lowering energy bills for consumers. The initiative also promises to support biodiversity by incorporating environmentally friendly design features to protect and enhance local wildlife habitats.

As a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP), the scheme will undergo rigorous scrutiny and requires a Development Consent Order from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero before construction can begin.

In addition to providing clean energy, the project could create hundreds of jobs during its development and operational phases, further boosting the local economy. Proponents of the scheme highlight its potential to set a benchmark for sustainable infrastructure development in the UK.

Public consultations and environmental assessments are expected to take place in the coming months as Elements Green engages with stakeholders and the local community to refine the proposal.
