SOLAR PASSES COAL IN EU MILESTONE
Solar energy surpassed coal in 2024, marking a historic shift in the EU’s renewable energy transition
In a landmark shift, solar energy has officially overtaken coal in the EU’s electricity mix for the first time.
Last yer solar contributed 11% of the EU’s power, surpassing coal’s 10%, according to Ember’s European Electricity Review. This milestone highlights the rapid transition towards renewables in the region.
The share of renewable energy surged to 47%, (up from 34% in 2019), driven by significant growth in solar and wind energy. Fossil fuel generation dropped to 29%, marking a historic low.
“Fossil fuels are losing their grip on EU energy,” said Dr Chris Rosslowe of Ember.
Solar generation grew by 22% in 2024, adding 66 GW—the equivalent of 450,000 solar panels installed daily.
Hungary, Greece and Spain led the solar revolution, with Hungary achieving 25% solar generation.
The EU’s transition has also reduced dependency on imported fossil fuels. Without additional wind and solar since 2019, the EU would have needed to import an extra €59 billion in gas and coal.
Despite progress, experts caution that further advancements in wind energy and grid flexibility are essential.
Enhanced storage and smart electrification will also be key to adapting the energy system to new demands.
