UK hospital deploys first solar car park
Veolia and 3ti have launched the solar car park at Eastbourne District General Hospital, producing 1,000MWh of solar-generated electricity annually
Resource management company Veolia, in collaboration with 3ti solar car park specialists, has initiated renewable electricity generation at Eastbourne District General Hospital (EDGH).
The solar car park (SCP) is predicted to generate 1,000MWh of solar-generated electricity each year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 222 tonnes in the first year.
The new array comprises 2,412 panels installed across eight canopies that cover 400 car parking spaces.
As a high-energy user, the hospital is expected to benefit from significant savings by producing its renewable electricity on-site, thereby decreasing its reliance on the national grid.
Furthermore, the project addresses the demand for workplace electric vehicle (EV) charging by providing ten solar-powered EV charge points for staff.
This initiative is part of a £27 million energy management contract with Veolia to upgrade Eastbourne District General Hospital.
Commenting on the development, John Abraham, Chief Operating Officer – Veolia UK and Ireland – Industrial, Water and Energy said: “Achieving the NHS net zero targets and maintaining the essential patient care facilities, requires a holistic building approach.”
Tim Evans, Founder and Chief Executive Officer at 3ti added: “This project is a win-win for all parties: the SCP provides low-cost and low-carbon electricity for the hospital, car park users benefit from the cover and lighting provided by the canopies, and staff with EVs can charge their cars whilst at work.”
